The Archer by Taylor Swift Lyrics

Combat, I'm ready for combat
I say I don't want that, but what if I do?
'Cause cruelty wins in the movies
I've got a hundred thrown-out speeches I almost said to you

Easy they come, easy they go
I jump from the train, I ride off alone
I never grew up, it's getting so old
Help me hold on to you

I've been the archer, I've been the prey
Who could ever leave me, darling
But who could stay?

Dark side, I search for your dark side
But what if I'm alright, right, right, right here?
And I cut off my nose just to spite my face
Then I hate my reflection for years and years

I wake in the night, I pace like a ghost
The room is on fire, invisible smoke
And all of my heroes die all alone
Help me hold on to you

I've been the archer, I've been the prey
Screaming, who could ever leave me, darling
But who could stay?
(I see right through me, I see right through me)

'Cause they see right through me
They see right through me
They see right through
Can you see right through me?
They see right through
They see right through me
I see right through me
I see right through me

All the king's horses, all the king's men
Couldn't put me together again
'Cause all of my enemies started out friends
Help me hold on to you

I've been the archer, I've been the prey
Who could ever leave me, darling
But who could stay?
(I see right through me, I see right through me)
Who could stay?
Who could stay?
Who could stay?
You could stay
You could stay

"All the king's horses, all the king's men
Couldn't put me together again
'Cause all of my enemies started out friends
Help me hold on to you..
"

The above song's lines is a direct interpolation of the children’s nursery rhyme, “Humpty Dumpty,” largely popularized by poet Mother Goose:

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the king’s horses and all the king’s men Couldn’t put Humpty together again.

Taylor molds the rhyme to exemplify her own struggles with her friends-turned-enemies. Swift is no stranger to this occurrence, evidenced through her discontinued feud with Katy Perry and ongoing quarrel with Kanye West, whom she called a ‘friend’ in “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things.” Specifically, Perry’s feud originated through mutual admiration, quickly turning into animosity after Katy allegedly stole back-up dancers and Taylor revealed the true meaning behind “Bad Blood”:

I was never sure if we were friends or not. […] She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me. […] So now I have to avoid her. It’s awkward, and I don’t like it.

The use of a children’s nursery rhyme also further develops Taylor’s inability to “grow up,” mentioned earlier in the track—viewing adult problems through a watered-down lens in an attempt to better understand and distance herself from the pain.
